HOMElink celebrates 2nd Anniversary with a Tea dance
HOMElink celebrated their 2nd anniversary with a party for members and friends at the Esplanade Hotel, Strand Road, Bray on the 20th May 2010.
HOMElink has been making a difference to the lives of older people in Wicklow and south Dublin now for 2 years. They have grown from 3 members in May 2008 to now over 460 members, which is testament to the need that is out there in our community for these services.
HOMElink provides a phone support line and a small repairs and basic maintenance service for older people.
Members receive a daily phone call at a pre-arranged time which consists of a friendly chat and also reminds them of any upcoming appointments. If after a number of attempts the phone is not answered, HOMElink will get in touch with an emergency contact person and if necessary, contact the Gardai.
The service also keeps members in touch with community activities and members are invited to HOMElink social events. As part of its social events HOMElink holds tea dances twice a year.

The Anniversary party on Thursday was held at the Esplanade Hotel and more than 100 members came for the fun, music and dancing. The raffle on the day brought great excitement with prizes donated from The Beach House, The Royal Marine Hotel and Time Granted.
"It was a lovely day and great time was had by all. We had music from Ray Cranley and there was plenty of dancing, clapping and foot-tapping!" says Anne General Manager of HOMElink.
HOMElink also provides a small repairs and basic maintenance service.
"Sometimes older people can find it hard to find reliable and trustworthy people to do their maintenance work. Our skilled handy men are in a great demand doing projects from cutting grass to fixing a security light." says Anne.

Co Enzyme Q10
Where to Find It CoQ10 is found primarily in fish and meat, but the amounts in food are far less than what can be obtained from supplements.
Possible Deficiencies
Deficiency is poorly understood, but it may be caused by synthesis problems in the body rather than an insufficiency in the diet. Low blood levels have been reported in people with heart failure, cardiomyopathy, gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), morbid obesity, hypertension, muscular dystrophy, diabetes, AIDS, and in some people on kidney dialysis. People with phenylketonuria (PKU) may be deficient in CoQ10 because of dietary restrictions.81 CoQ10 levels are also generally lower in older people. The test used to assess CoQ10 status is not routinely available from medical laboratories.Best Form to Take Some,82 but not all,83 research suggests that a fat-soluble form of CoQ10 is absorbed better than CoQ10 in granular (powder) form.84
How to Use It
Adult levels of supplementation are usually 30–90 mg per day, although people with specific health conditions may supplement with higher levels (with the involvement of a physician). Most of the research on heart conditions has used 90–150 mg of CoQ10 per day. People with cancer who consider taking much higher amounts should discuss this issue with a doctor before supplementing. There are several anecdotal reports of large amounts of CoQ10 resulting in improvements in certain types of cancer. However, controlled trials are needed to confirm these preliminary observations. Most doctors recommend that CoQ10 be taken with meals to improve absorption.

Update from the HOMELink Team!
We hope you all had a Merry Christmas and have had a wonderful New Year so far! We had a very busy 2009 and it looks as though 2010 is going to be even busier!
Since our last blog post, we have held too many coffee mornings for us to count, in lots of places around Wicklow and South Dublin, and they were all great successes!
On the 28th of October 2009 we held our annual swim in the Shoreline in Bray, thanks to everybody who turned up, helped out and raised money for Homelink and Easi-Cabs.
On Thursday the 26th November 2009, we held a Thanksgiving Party for our Members in the Esplanade Hotel in Bray. Over 120 people turned up! And we all enjoyed the delicious food and listening and dancing to Ray Cranley who came along to play music for us on the day! We even had Santa Claus there to get us into the Christmas spirit!
Maoiliosa joined the Homelink team in November 2009. As she lives locally and loves talking, we think she will be a great asset to the team! Maoiliosa has worked as a Team Leader with the Enniskerry division of the Meals on Wheels for the past five years, and will take over the Chairperson’s role at the end of 2010. She and the Homelink team are working hard to ensure that 2010 is a year where the Homelink message will continue to reach those who will benefit most from our range of services.
